Georgia Winter Hummingbird Report for 2010 - 2011
The 2010-2011 winter hummer season is complete and we had 41 reports in 21 counties.  This year was about the same as 2 years ago, however it was about 24% lower than last season.  Numbers of wintering hummingbirds were low all over the Southeastern US again this year.    The highlights of this season was another Buff-bellied Hummingbird that showed up on Jekyll Island.  Early photos indicated the bird was banded and it was initially thought this was the Buff-bellied that was banded last season on St Simons Island, but that Buff-bellied was recaptured in Louisiana shortly after.  Suspense continued to build until photographs confirmed the bird as a one that was banded in Florida just weeks prior to arriving in Georgia.  If accepted by the Records Committee this will make the 3rd state record of this species.  Also noteworthy was a young male Broad-tailed Hummingbird in Douglasville and an adult female Allen's in Braselton, both of which have only been confirmed about 10 or so times in the Peach state.  We had a few returning adults and some interesting recaptures of birds moving from one location to another.  Thanks for all of your help in gathering this data on wintering hummingbirds in Georgia.  It will be interesting to see the trend on the yearly reports as the word gets out about feeding our winter hummingbirds in Georgia.
